Slovakia Emerges as Russia’s New Strategic Partner Within the EU

With Viktor Orbán’s influence waning, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stepped into the role of Moscow’s most prominent European ally. While the rest of the Visegrád Group aligns against the Kremlin, Fico is actively deepening ties through revived economic commissions, military cooperation, and a shared pursuit of Russian energy security.

Slovakia Emerges as Russia’s New Strategic Partner Within the EU

The shift in Bratislava is tangible. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár recently moved to restart a joint economic committee with Russia, a decision announced just one day before the anniversary of the 1968 Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. This diplomatic warming extends to the defense sector, where Slovak officials have downplayed the threat posed by Moscow despite intelligence reports linking Russian agents to sabotaged infrastructure near Prešov. Following a May meeting between Fico and Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin, the two nations have even facilitated a reciprocal exchange of military attachés.

Leaked Russian government documents reveal that the upcoming bilateral meetings aim to secure long-term access to Russian oil, gas, and nuclear fuel for Slovakia’s power plants. These energy priorities have placed Fico at odds with broader EU efforts to phase out Russian imports. While the Slovak government frames this as pragmatic diplomacy for national interests, experts warn that these maneuvers effectively weaken NATO’s collective defensive posture from within. As Fico assumes the presidency of the Visegrád Group, he is leveraging regional concerns over energy costs and carbon market regulations to maneuver around the consensus established by Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary’s new leadership. For the remaining 26 EU heads of state, the question is no longer whether Slovakia is pivoting toward the Kremlin, but how much influence that pivot will exert on European unity.
