From IBM Management to a $2 Million Marketing Agency

After two decades at IBM, Becky DeGrossa traded corporate consulting for a master's in psychology, eventually launching CounselingWise. What began as a side project teaching fellow therapists how to manage their online presence has evolved into a seven-figure marketing agency that reached $2 million in revenue this year.

From IBM Management to a $2 Million Marketing Agency

DeGrossa’s transition was driven by a desire to retain the coaching aspects of her tech career while applying her technical expertise to a new field. After closing her private therapy practice four years after its inception, she focused on providing done-for-you services—including SEO, content writing, and Google Ads—to mental health professionals. Her agency now maintains a consistent profit of approximately $300,000 annually.

The business model relies on three pillars: identifying services therapists preferred to outsource, rigorous systematization, and a culture of empathy. DeGrossa realized early on that while her peers wanted visibility, they lacked the technical inclination for search engine optimization. By testing new strategies, such as the implementation of schema following recent search algorithm updates, her team identifies what works before scaling those processes through a workforce of 40 to 50 contractors.

Management remains a core component of her success. Because her clients are sensitive to human interaction, DeGrossa prioritizes hiring project managers with strong interpersonal skills over those who simply possess technical proficiency. This approach ensures that the technical execution of web development and marketing remains balanced with the high level of client care expected by the therapeutic community.
